Climate mitigation by energy and material substitution of wood products has an expiry date

چکیده
The expected increased share of renewables due to the ongoing energy transition may reduce estimated potential mitigation effect wood. Here, we climate change for five scenarios wood products use in Europe applying dynamic substitution factors embracing a future mix with an increasing accordance emission reductions necessary achieve Paris Agreement targets. Our innovative modelling approach also included elimination eternal recycling loops, inclusion more realistic cascading scenarios, and adoption marginal (ceteris paribus) approach. Results show that derived from material is 33% lower 2030 than previously predicted, even 96% 2100, showing its expiry date by end century. Nevertheless, product use, addition forests, represent 3.3% European reduction targets 2030.

EU mitigation potential of harvested wood products
BACKGROUND The new rules for the Land Use, Land Use Change and Forestry sector under the Kyoto Protocol recognized the importance of Harvested Wood Products (HWP) in climate change mitigation. We used the Tier 2 method proposed in the 2013 IPCC KP Supplement to estimate emissions and removals from HWP from 1990 to 2030 in EU-28 countries with three future harvest scenarios (constant historical ...
متن کاملClimate change mitigation effect of harvested wood products in regions of Japan
BACKGROUND Harvested wood products (HWPs) mitigate climate change through carbon storage, material substitution, and energy substitution. We construct a model to assess the overall climate change mitigation effect (comprising the carbon storage, material substitution, and energy substitution effects) resulting from HWPs in regions of Japan. The model allows for projections to 2050 based on futu...
متن کاملUnder What Circumstances Do Wood Products from Native Forests Benefit Climate Change Mitigation?
Climate change mitigation benefits from the land sector are not being fully realised because of uncertainty and controversy about the role of native forest management. The dominant policy view, as stated in the IPCC's Fifth Assessment Report, is that sustainable forest harvesting yielding wood products, generates the largest mitigation benefit. We demonstrate that changing native forest managem...
